Withywood School (Mainstream 11-16 yrs)
Withywood School is a mixed community comprehensive school in the centre of an inner city social housing estate in South Bristol. As a Barclays New Futures award winner, the school has been able to provide environment-based opportunities in the community for up to 80 students in Y10 and 11. The students work alongside students from Florence Brown Special School with Community Service Volunteers and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers to enhance underused open space, play areas and areas used by partner primary schools.
Florence Brown (Special 5-16 yrs)
Florence Brown Community School is a 'school without walls'. It opens its doors to children with complex needs throughout Bristol and has satellite classrooms in mainstream schools. They are involved in environmental projects including the manufacture of concrete garden products and community composting which are leading them into the enterprise culture as a commercial undertaking and thereby creating work placement opportunities.
Icknield School (Special 2-19 yrs)
Icknield is a school in Andover for pupils with either severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. Many also have physical difficulties. The school has adopted a local area of natural beautyand integrated its maintenance and development into the post 16 curriculum. Student empowerment has led to a noticeable enhancement of their personal and academic development.
St Nicholas (Special 4-18 yrs)
St Nicholas is a school for pupils with severe learning difficulties, many of whom have complex special educational needs. The students were invited to contribute ideas for developing a tiny piece of land originally intended as a vegetable patch. With the assistance of a number of voluntary organisations they developed the land into a sensory garden.
The Wey Valley School (Mainstream 11-16 yrs)
The Wey Valley School is a mixed comprehensive serving Weymouth and and the surrounding area. Working in partnership with the on-site primary school and a special school, they developed an area of the school grounds into a fully accessible sensory garden. The project has created opportunities for students to learn and interact. It has enabled them to develop their commumication, number and ICT skills. Teachers are impressed by students' ability to communicate with special school pupils.
Wyvern School (Special 3-19 yrs)
Wyvern School is a special school that works closely with The Wey Valley School. Together they take part in outdoor activity residentials whereby the students mix with peers in an educational and social setting. Older students from the mainstream school act as facilitators and helpers but everyone is encouraged and able to take part in the activities.
