Personal Profile - Ian - St Nicholas

As a KS4 student Ian worked with fellow students to think about the original ideas for the piece of waste ground. Based in the curriculum, they worked on a project to discuss ways to improve the site and plan the developments. When volunteers from RAF Lyneham came to clear the ground, these students joined in. When the garden designer came they worked with her, too, putting forward their ideas. A photographic record was kept.

Ian always took a particular interest in everything to do with the garden. His language developed and his practical skills increased. He attended the local Agricultural College on a weekly basis and further developed his interest in horticulture. He began to take considerable pride and pleasure in his achievements. His parents were so keen to give him the opportunity to continue to develop these skills that they sent him to a residential college that specialises in horticulture. This is an area of work where he might find employment.

Ian's social skills have improved from working with his peers and relating to new people. He gained confidence and discovered something he could succeed in.

One of the important learning outcomes from seeking information about Ian and the early part of the project is the need to keep good records - including student work and photographs - so that others can learn from them.
