Schools who feel a certain pupil is at risk of exclusion and have offered alternatives within school, often liaise with outside agencies to develop an off-site educational programme, which aims to re-engage that pupil in learning. The Borough is currently reviewing the alternative curriculum provision provided largely by voluntary sector organisations for disaffected pupils at risk of exclusion. The group meets approximately every two months to discuss the progress made accord to an agreed action plan that includes auditing, and accreditation of the work young people are doing with community organisations. Follow up work is conducted with individual providers to ensure that a range of accredited and quality placements are on offer to schools.
The group is made up of representatives from the Behavioural Support Team, Head of the PRU, Barking Colleges Focus Programme, Youth Support and Development Service, Careers Service, the Post-14 inspector, the All Change Project, and chaired by the Head of Lifelong Learning. The work of the group is currently focusing on the creation of a role and appointment of someone that will carryout the duties of the group on a day to day basis and coordinate the work.
