The Government´s 10-year anti-drugs strategy, Tackling drugs to build a better Britain, was launched in April 1998. It has four main elements:
- Young People - to help young people resist drugs misuse
- Communities - to protect communities from drug-related anti-social and criminal behaviour
- Treatment - to enable people with drug problems to overcome them
- To raise awareness of the EDP and support the consultation processes
- Availability - to stifle the availability of illegal drugs on the streets.
There are a number of key activities that support elements of this strategy. They include:
- Young Person´s Substance Misuse Plans to integrate service provision with other existing children´s services
- The promotion of drug education in schools through the National Healthy School Standard and the framework of personal, social and health education (PSHE)
- Connexions, a new careers advice and youth support service for teenagers. Connexions personal advisers will be able to co-ordinate help for drug misuse problems from the various agencies involved in careers, health and youth services
- Crime Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) to work locally to strengthen communities, disrupt drugs markets and tackle drug-related crime. The partnerships comprise local authorities, police and a range of community groups. CDRPs choose how to spend their funding, according to the needs of the local area
Work carried out in accordance with the National Drugs Strategy is driven locally by Drug and Alcohol Action Teams (DAATs). There are three major plans that are being implemented at the local level, an Adult Treatment Plan, Communities Against Drugs, and theYoung Peoples Substance Misuse Plan.
