Education Action Zones tend to focus on one or two key activities to raise standards in education. In addition to the 73 large zones nationally, there are currently 40 small EAZs that have been set up as part of the Excellence in Cities programme. Typically, small zones consist of just one secondary school and its associated primary and specialist schools. Small zones receive £250,000 per year for three to five years from the DfES and can receive up to an additional £50,000 a year to match any sponsorship they raise from the private sector.
There are two small education action zones in Barking and Dagenham:
- Gateway to Excellence - which centres around Eastbury Comprehensive and its feeder primary schools
- Pursuing Excellence - which focuses on Barking Abbey and Dagenham Priory Comprehensives with 6 link primary schools
The Gateway to Excellence zone has three priorities including to enable all pupils to feel a valued part of the school; that school can make a differences; that school provides an environment where they can succeed. The Pursuing Excellence zones priorities include improving partnership, pupil transfer and social development between key stages 1, 2 and 3, which drives primary-secondary collaborative work.
The key partners in the zones are the Headteachers of the schools, boroughs Department of Education, Arts and Libraries, Welbeck Steel, the Education Business Partnership, the Chamber of Commerce, with additional partners being sought.
