As part of the national drive to raise standards in schools, Councils are required to produce an Education Development Plan (EDP). Barking and Dagenham are preparing their second EDP to cover 2002-2007. This is being written in the context of major improvements made nationally, which have been exceeded in the borough, particularly at Key Stage 2 and GCSE. The new EDP will include a major focus on Key Stage 3, where the improvements made at Key Stage 2 and GCSE have not been matched either nationally or locally. Ten priorities have been agreed, and include improving levels of attendance in schools and addressing social exclusion.
The EDP has been developed in consultation with the community and demonstrates how the Department for Education and Libraries will successfully contribute to the seven community priorities, as well as the impact of initiatives such as Excellence in Cities and the Key Stage 3 strategy.
