The Crick Challenge Awards

The awards, for primary, secondary and special schools (up to the age of 16), are designed to mark the 10^th Anniversary (September 2008) of the publication of Sir Bernard Crick’s report which proposed education for citizenship and the teaching of democracy in schools.

The awards are presented in collaboration with ACT (Association for Citizenship Teaching).

How many and what are they worth?
10 awards will be granted, one in each Government Office (GO region) in England. They are the North East, North West, Yorkshire and Humberside, West Midlands, East Midlands, Eastern, South West, and South East. There will be two awards in the London region. Each award is worth £500.

Selection criteria

Grants will be awarded to schools which best fulfil the criteria for a project led by young people for young people and their community. The community can be the school itself or the wider (global) community. The application will need to show:

• Clear identification by a group of young people of the need for a challenge project
• Evidence, as a result of meetings or surveys, of a priority issue or need that they wish to address
• Indications of ‘political literacy’ to be addressed through the project ie a current event or issue in context and how the young people see themselves as agents of change
• The extent to which the project incorporates issues of diversity and cohesion in its planning and delivery
• Evidence that the project will be primarily led and managed by young people themselves.
